The California State Assembly Internship Program offers students a unique opportunity to participate in and experience the work of a Capitol/District Assembly Office. Applicants must commit to at least 14 hours per week between Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Capitol Internship:
As a Capitol intern, you will gain experience conducting legislative research on current bills and policy issues, analyzing proposed legislation, and preparing briefing materials for staff review. You'll attend committee hearings and stakeholder meetings to observe the legislative process firsthand. Additional duties may include drafting correspondence and contributing to special projects. Capitol interns also have the opportunity to participate in legislative briefings, network with other legislative offices, and gain exposure to the broader Capitol community including lobbyists, advocacy groups, and fellow government staff.
District Internship:
As a District intern, you will serve as a vital link between constituents and their state government, gaining hands-on experience in public service and community engagement. Your responsibilities will include assisting constituents with inquiries and issues involving state agencies. You'll help coordinate and staff community events, as well as draft correspondence to address constituent concerns, maintain case management systems, conduct research on local issues affecting the AD-64 community, and assist with general office operations. This role provides invaluable experience in constituent services and community relations while making a direct impact on your neighbors and community members.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must be enrolled in or have graduated from an undergraduate or community college program. Additionally, the following qualifications are critical:
- excellent written and oral communication skills
- strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to work with minimal
supervision - critical thinking and creative problem solving
- ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines simultaneously.

Interns have the opportunity to earn a letter of recommendation and may also qualify for school/university credit. Interns will gain valuable education and work experience by fully participating in agreed-upon work hours. All internship work is voluntary and students will not receive monetary compensation.
