September 26 is National Voter Registration Day
CARSON, Calif --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson, Chairman of the Assembly Democratic Caucus, released the following statement in recognition of National Voter Registration Day:
“Voting is one way we express ourselves as a community, as voters and Americans, but to exercise this basic right, we must be registered to vote. It is an essential function in the United States. By registering to vote and making our voices heard, we are helping shape the place we live.”
AB 1461 (Gonzalez-Fletcher, 2015), known as the New Motor Voter Act, was signed into law in 2015 by Governor Jerry Brown. It will register to vote every eligible California citizen who goes to a Department of Motor Vehicles office to get a driver’s license or renew one, potentially adding millions to the state’s voter rolls.
Voter registration is also available online and those who are 16 or 17 can pre-register.
“We are trying to roll out the red carpet and make voting as easy and accessible as possible. As a legislative body, it is our responsibility to make sure we are reducing barriers that hinder people from participating in the voting process.”
